- China to
close Tibet land route to Nepal from today
(1/09/2000)
- KATHMANDU: China
will close its only land route from Tibet to Nepal on Friday in the wake
of reports that Beijing does not want Kathmandu to give asylum to Tibetan
refugees. China believes that Nepal is being used as a transit point to
reach Dharamsala in Himachal Pradesh, the seat of the government-in-exile
of the Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama.
- China's action
comes after the 17th Karmapa Lama's escape from Tibet to Dharamsala earlier
this year. The 14-year-old Karmapa Lama is one of Tibet's most revered
"Living Buddhas". He escaped from the Tsurphu Monastery, his palace in the
Tibetan capital Lhasa, on December 28 and reached Dharamshala on January
5. The allegation that he used Nepali soil as a transit point to reach
India has made Chinese suspicious. Dozens of Tibetans cross the border to
Nepal in a dilapidated condition everyday to escape alleged Chinese atrocities.
They eventually go to India, which is home to at least 100,000 Tibetan refugees.
- Desperate travel
agents who wanted to send tourists through the land route to Tibet via the
Arniko Highway -- better known as Kodari Rajmarg -- were turned back by
Chinese embassy officials in Kathmandu, who said: "no tourist from land
route from September 1."
- In recent years,
Kathmandu had been a transit point for those who wanted to go to Tibet avoiding
mainland China. Because of this route Nepal's tourism industry has also
benefitted.
- No one at the
Chinese embassy was available to comment on this issue. Three months ago,
the embassy tightened its visa regulations against Nepali nationals without
giving any reasons for it.
